Choosing a “studio wardrobe” for a newborn baby is not quite the same as choosing a wardrobe for parents! We are not looking for individual garments, moreover, we are looking to combine accessories with a backdrop that will flow together for the final gallery. Think blankets, knits, hats, and hair accessories!

Newborn Photography Baby’s Studio Wardrobe

When creating your studio wardrobe for a baby, start with things like blankets and knits; these should have some stretch so they can be pulled taut in an image (blanket wrinkles are no joke when editing!). Wraps should then be chosen to compliment the backdrop blanket you have chosen. Again, stretch is important as you want to neatly wrap the baby to present that cocooned look.

Things to Consider When Choosing Newborn Wraps

Choose smaller wraps (15″ diameter) with or without texture in order to add to your final image. I suggest choosing a more neutral backdrop fabric that can be used in a myriad of images and then mixing up the wraps to add a little splash of color or texture. Wraps will be photographed often in the same sharp focal plane as the baby. Backdrop fabrics will tend to ‘melt away’ into the background when you have a wider open aperture.

Adding Texture to Your Newborn Photography Baby Studio Wardrobe

A beautiful little knit hat in an organic tone (I love cotton or mohair or angora) can add so much texture to an image and newborn headbands can add a floral touch or a little color variation to a neutral image for a baby. I have to admit that the fuzzy (mohair) bear bonnets are my favorite. They add just the right amount of softness around the face that is needed to keep the focus on that sweet baby face.

Adding Special Elements to Your Newborn Photography

Also let mom and dad know that they are welcome to bring in pieces that they really want
in the photos – handmade blankets or clothing are a great way to bring a vintage or special touch to an image. Or other culturally significant pieces can be used too! Really, whatever they feel is special and that they want to remember with their baby will look beautiful, and it will be extra special for the family 🙂
