Choosing newborn photography props for our sessions can be challenging – there are always so many options, and most specialized newborn photography props are very pricey! To keep your photos looking timeless, I recommend choosing mostly neutral items as your base props. Weaves, rattan and baskets have been around for years and won’t go out of fashion. Avoid going for trendy looks that might date your photos. Anything with a natural weave or texture has been around for centuries. Choose earthy tones and colors found in nature.

What props do I need for newborn photography?

Props from a specialized newborn prop shop are well sized and have been created just for newborns. However it may be a great idea to choose one or two newborn photography props here (maybe a sweet little bed or beautiful handmade bowl) and then fill in your other newborn photography prop supplies with finds from Winners, Homesense, Joanns or crafting stores near you. Search vintage shops and thrift stores. There are many inexpensive gems that will do well in giving you more options for props in your sessions.

Make sure to keep the size of your props in mind as well; we recommend that all newborn photography props be at least 15 inches in diameter, so that baby can rest comfortably. To measure in store, put your arm out and make a fist. This measurement tends to be about the same length of the top of your fist to your elbow, which can be really helpful when you are measuring.

What can I use for newborn photography backdrop?

And don’t forget, if you’re struggling to start your newborn photography prop collection, digital backdrops make a perfect backdrop to your photos without having to invest in the prop at all!! Check out all of our options in our newborn digital backrop shop
